ABC Build Houston Magazine Feature – Mobil Steel is "Built to Last"
February 1, 2010 (Houston, Texas) – Mobil Steel is a Houston area Steel Fabricator that recently celebrated 40 years in business. When examining factors that contribute to the company’s longevity in the market, it is clear that the team’s core values are what set them apart.
Mobil Steel approaches their customers with the intent of gaining a comprehensive understanding of their needs and expectations, then developing a strong working relationship around those needs. “We continue to focus both internally and externally on our core values, which include reliable service, flexibility in capacity and high-quality products time and time again. Within the company, we remind each other constantly that we are here for the customer. Mobil Steel aims to establish ourselves as a ‘go-to’ resource for a successful project on behalf of both our clients and their owners,” says Leonard A. Bedell, President and CEO.
As a steel fabricator, Mobil Steel is one of a handful of Houston area suppliers certified by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). “Design engineers and owners are starting to emphasize this certification, and Mobil Steel earns some of our work as a result. We have worked hard to meet and maintain the stringent requirements of quality certification and are very proud of our AISC Certification. It sets us apart from the competition,” explains Bedell.
During the current period of economic stress, Mobil Steel maintained focus on taking advantage of opportunities to improve company methodologies and capabilities.
”We are seizing the opportunity to upgrade our equipment, facilities, policies, and procedures. We would love for the skies to clear and recovery to happen overnight, but this isn’t the first time that we’ve experienced a downturn in the economy. Our company is focusing on the things that are within our control in order to be prepared when the opportunities come.” Using the slower times to make improvements also involved ensuring that the company is aligned with vendors who share an appreciation for the work that Mobil Steel performs. “We are very loyal to our vendors, and we expect them to be loyal to us. It’s important that we share the same business values, that we jump through hoops together, and that we clearly understand our common goal: to meet our customer’s schedule and provide a quality job.”
During its 40 years in business, Mobil Steel has seen a fair share of industry challenges. Through economic stress and changes in ownership, Mobil Steel has persevered—rebuilding and strengthening their reputation along the way. Today, the company enjoys financial and management stability complemented by loyal customers. “We face challenging time periods by implementing strategic planning, investing in upgrades, and enhancing our workforce. No matter what, we stay focused on top-notch customer service day-in and day-out. Mobil Steel looks toward the long-term, and we strive to improve our service as opportunities present themselves when the time comes. The key is preparation,” says Bedell.
Recently, as the bidding process has become more competitive, Mobil Steel concentrated on developing relationships within the industry. “In this economy, owners will depend on companies that have the commitment level, the resources, and have proven themselves reliable.” Mobil Steel’s smaller size has also proven an advantage, as the company has not been forced to make major cutbacks despite global financial woes. “We firmly believe that companies will come back to those companies that stayed committed to our market and have the integrity and reliability to complete jobs on schedule and in a first-class manner,” says Bedell.
When asked how Mobil Steel plans to emerge from the current economic downturn, Bedell explains that it’s a matter of attitude. “Mobil Steel is in a strong financial position and has great relationships with our bankers. We have been able to invest in our people, processes and equipment, and we are prepared for opportunities. It’s a great time for the commercial and public works arenas to build projects at a lower cost than originally budgeted,” Bedell explains enthusiastically.
As Mobil Steel continues to plan for the future, the company is focusing on utilizing its core strengths, putting more effort into identifying those companies that are aligned with its value system. “We are trying to ensure that we keep in front of those relationships and continue to look at projects that we may not have considered before. We are increasing our skill sets so that we can offer more diversity and options to the customer. We are looking to the future, and we believe that we have made the right investments.”
Membership in the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) is one of those meaningful investments, and it helps the company stay tuned in to the political process both locally and nationally. “ABC represents those who share our core values, and that gives us an industry advantage. Mobil Steel’s fabrication of the steel structure is the part of the project that no one sees once the job is completed, but we are proud to be an integral part of the process. Both Houston and Texas have a ‘can-do’ reputation, and we try and epitomize that. We want to be on the front lines.”

Mobil Steel Day Declared to Honor Company’s 40th Anniversary
December 23, 2009 (Houston, Texas) – Mobil Steel Day was declared by the City of Houston to honor a local steel fabricator’s 40th anniversary during ceremonies recently celebrating the founding of the company in 1969 on South Wayside in Houston. Additionally, federal and state officials issued resolutions recognizing Mobil Steel International, Inc. for its regional economic impact and role in building infrastructure for energy, petrochemical and commercial industries.
Officials from four cities- Houston, Pearland, Pasadena and Jersey Village, state and federal governments were joined by customers, suppliers and all employees of Mobil Steel for the event recognizing Mobil Steel’s 40 years in the steel fabricating business. The company fabricates steel projects for some of the world’s essential industries, including manufacturing, chemical, petroleum, communication, clean fuels, and power utilities, as well as commercial construction.
Houston City Council Member Wanda Adams saluted Mobil Steel for creating jobs in Greater Houston and particularly in District D. Earlier in the day the council member joined fabrication shop members for pictures. “These Mobil Steel employees’ dedication to quality standards and the company’s overall commitment to state of the art equipment help the company meet customers’ needs. We are pleased to have Mobil Steel and its jobs in District D,” she told the crowd before announcing that Mayor Bill White had declared Mobil Steel Day be recognized by the City of Houston.
Texas House, U.S. Congress Recognize Mobil Steel
State Representative John Davis, District 127, read from a Texas resolution that applauded Mobil Steel for its work with industries essential to the economic prosperity of the Greater Houston region. “Mobil Steel is a leading steel fabricator, embraces quality and continuously demonstrates quality service job-after-job.
Deric Muhammad, representing U.S. Congressman Al Green’s office, passed along Congressional recognition for creating jobs in the ninth congressional district and providing necessary services for the area and region. The Congressional recognition distinguished Mobil Steel for meeting certification as a small business through the U.S. government’s Small Business Administration program.
In addition to creating more than 50 direct jobs in the Houston region, Mobil Steel engages Houston area vendors and suppliers, including small businesses such as HUB, minority-owned and women-owned businesses as vendor partners. Mobil Steel buys steel from local suppliers, engages local plan detailers and steel erectors, as well as galvanizing and painting contractors. Additionally, the company uses local professional services for accounting, banking and insurance and other critical services.
“Our vendors and our Mobil Steel employees are dedicated to providing reliable service, being flexible to meet our customers’ needs and delivering on quality each day,” said Leonard A. Bedell, President and CEO. “These are core values that started with the original founders, Mr. and Mrs. Manhart, and continue today with our current investors, owners, management, employees and vendors.”
The Manharts started the business in 1969. Another owner purchased the business in 2001 before the Manharts returned to own and run the business. On Mr. Manhart’s death in 2004 a group of investors joined with Mobil Steel employees to continue the business. It has been a success story of a small company surviving with a core group of dedicated, long-term employees. Even in the current difficult economic times, Mobil Steel continues to invest in employees, equipment and assets and a dedication to quality.
Mobil Steel is one of only a handful of Houston area steel fabrication shops to be quality certified by American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). Mobil Steel also
Mobil Steel Invests in People, Equipment to Provide Quality Service
spent money on a new Peddinghaus 9 Spindle Drill during the economic downturn. The new equipment helps keep Mobil Steel more effective and efficient in meeting customers’ needs, according to Bedell. Bedell also noted that Mobil Steel has kept employees fully engaged during these tough times and Mobil Steel has been particularly diligent in following up with customers. “Even when we do not win a bid, we make sure the customer knows that we are willing to do whatever work we can to help them,” Bedell said. “Yes, we have had a few take us up on that promise when the fabricator they went with could not deliver.”
A special tribute was made to the original founders, Dorothey Manhart and her late husband Dale Manhart who founded the company in 1969 with an original workforce of less than twelve that grew to nearly 90 employees in the prime of the oil boom. Eighteen employees who worked for the Manharts remain on the current Mobil Steel team.
Mr. Manhart’s goal was to work for companies in the oil industry. His company fabricated steel and even erected steel for refineries and chemical plants and for engineering and construction companies. Today, Mobil Steel continues that vision by serving many of those early customers, such as then engineering and construction giant Brown and Root now operating as KBR, and expanding to new customers in oil, gas, and energy, including the emerging alternative fuels industry.
“Mobil Steel continues the early values of the Manhart’s,” Bedell said. “Mobil Steel is moving forward on a strong foundation of the values and integrity and dedication of the early days coupled with appropriate changes and modern technology needed in today’s business world.”
Deric Muhammad of Congressman Al Green’s office; Leonard A. Bedell, President & CEO of Mobil Steel; Houston City Council Member Wanda Adams; and Texas State Representative John Davis pose for pictures after declaring Mobil Steel Day in Houston and recognizing Mobil Steel for creating jobs and providing quality steel fabrication to our region’s essential industries -- energy, petrochemical and commercial construction.

Mobil Steel Celebrates Steel Day with Focus on Quality, Service
September 18, 2009 (Houston, Texas) – Employees at Mobil Steel International, Inc., recognized the first annual Steel Day in the U.S. with cake and ice cream and a discussion focused on quality and customer service at the Houston steel fabricator. The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), which designated Friday, September 18th as the first annual Steel Day in the U.S., sponsored more than 80 events across the nation highlighting the value of steel construction.
The Houston region is a large player in the steel construction industry with steel a core construction element in Houston’s high-rise buildings, Houston’s refining, chemical, power and energy industries, and in Houston’s port deliveries. The Port of Houston handled a record 6.3 million tons of steel in 2008.
Steel Day activities focused on the steel construction industry’s contribution to sustainable design and construction. The steel industry has made advances toward a sustainable environment by building high-performance projects that minimize impact on the planet, incorporating high-technology equipment and improving production and efficiency. Even in the face of an uncertain and turbulent market, Mobil Steel recently added a Peddinghaus 9 Spindle Drill to provide more effective steel fabrication and efficient customer service.
Mobil Steel has fabricated steel for the steel construction industry since 1969 and is proud to be one of only a few steel fabricators in Houston who are quality certified by AISC. “Mobil Steel takes the extra step to meet stringent AISC certification standards which help us provide quality and reliable service to our industrial and commercial customers,” said Leonard A. Bedell, president and chief executive officer of Mobil Steel.
Across the nation, steel fabricators, mills, service centers, galvanizers, bender-rollers and others opened their facilities, jobsites, and offices, offering tours and inviting the architecture, engineering and construction community and general public to see how the steel industry contributes to building America.
"Steel Day in the U.S. is an opportunity for people to see how the structural steel industry operates, ask questions, and learn about our processes," said Chris Moor, director of industry mobilization at AISC.
Mobil Steel fabricates steel used in the commercial and industrial fields, including the petroleum, petrochemical, and power generation industries. Mobil Steel’s South Wayside facility in Houston has a production capacity of 1,200 tons per month in its 80,000 square feet of plant facilities under roof, providing flexibility to manage multiple projects. The 8.5-acre site is located within major freeway access to the refining and petrochemical complex in Harris and Galveston counties.

Car Show Winner Applies Quality Principles Practiced in Steel Fabrication Shop
More than 145 brightly painted cars trimmed with chrome wheels and accessories sparkled under the 100 degree sun at the Lion's Club field in Rosenberg, Texas. One car at the Summer Jam Car Show captured the attention of the judges and many of the estimated 60,000 car enthusiasts who attended the show. Mark Scott's bright green street-modified Charger drove away with the Best of Show trophy.
Scott, general manager at Mobil Steel International, Inc., a 40-year old Houston steel fabrication company, spent two years making adjustments and enhancements before bringing home the desired trophy. Paying close attention to detail included wearing a wardrobe with shoes to match his green street-modified Charger. The car was judged on technical merits such as the modifications made to the street vehicle – wheels, engine and safety aspects. Judging also included appearance from the look and condition of the paint job to the cleanliness of the exterior and interior, as well as the trunk.
“I spent a lot of time getting it just right. I changed out the exhaust system a number of times and tried several sets of wheels. I constantly searched for perfection – wiping away tiny specs of dust and removing the last bit of wax,” Scott said.
People who work with Scott are not surprised by his pursuit of perfection in the car shows. He applies the same principles he uses to manage operations at Mobil Steel's steel fabrication shop. “Showing the car is similar to providing the best steel fabrication to our customers. You understand the requirements and you excel in each step toward the final product,” Scott said.
“Mark puts high demands on Mobil Steel's performance and its production employees by setting a good example,” said Leonard Bedell, president and chief executive officer of Mobil Steel. “His winning the best of show trophy is quite an achievement. Mark has had to add a room to his [Pearland] home to hold all his trophies. We are proud of Mark.”
Scott is driven by the pursuit of quality – at Mobil Steel International, Inc. and the car shows.

Council Member Mike Sullivan Tours Mobil Steel Plant
March 23, 2009 (Houston, Texas) - Houston Council Member Mike Sullivan received a positive reception during a recent tour and business overview of the Mobil Steel International, Inc. steel fabrication plant. Mobil Steel management and employees expressed appreciation to the council member for his efforts to repair area roads and his general support of small business. They also demonstrated a new Peddinghaus drill purchased in December to position Mobil Steel as a viable and reliable fabrication source to meet industry requirements.
Leonard A.Bedell, President & CEO of Mobil Steel, said he and other businesses in the area were concerned with roadway safety for employees, suppliers and customers, as well as residents who live nearby. “During a neighborhood meeting, Mike Sullivan said he would address the road safety issue,” Bedell said. “Mike saw to it that the city took action. We appreciate that kind of assistance from our council member.” Bedell believes that Sullivan's experience as a small business owner gives the council member a unique perspective in managing District E city business. “As a small business owner himself, Mike knows how to manage a budget and set priorities, and he understands our issues and challenges. He knows business is tough in today's climate. He values businesses and employees who are safely and productively performing jobs that contribute to the local economy.”
Mobil Steel serviced a record number of customer projects at its plant in 2008, and in the face of tough economic times, invested in a new Peddinghaus drill/cutting machine that provides more effective steel fabrication and efficient customer service. “Even in the face of an uncertain and turbulent market, we are continuing to invest and to meet our customers' needs,” Bedell said. “I believe the council member appreciates our aggressive commitment to investing for future work, just as we appreciate his action to improve roads to get our products, employees and customers safely to our plant.”

NERVES OF MOBIL STEEL Flexibility in Steel Projects
As the economy hints at recession, energy prices soar, and raw materials costs rise – such as steel's 40 percent increase – companies are challenged to deliver value beyond pricing. Mobil Steel International, Inc., the 40-year-old steel fabrication business, meets the challenge by embracing customers and vendors as partners, demonstrating a “can do” assurance and trust.
“The customer is our partner,” explains Leonard A. Bedell, Mobil Steel's President and CEO. “We pride ourselves on serving their needs. Projects and customers change, however, we remain true to customers and our core values: integrity, reliability, quality and flexibility.”
Flexible Operations
Mobil Steel builds and trains a team of employees with experience and skills to serve customers. General Manager Mark Scott is an example of the multi-skilled personnel who return to Mobil Steel and accelerate its development. Scott worked in the Mobil Steel plant while still in school,
developing operational and leadership skills. Now a veteran manager in steel fabrication
and erection, his vast knowledge helps operations better serve customers.
Following a failed ownership change ending in 2004, new management and investors directed the company's recovery with emphasis on commercial building. Mobil Steel fabricated steel for schools, hospitals, and office buildings. As the company rebuilt its management team and skilled staff, they responded to changing energy markets and began fabrication for major projects in
petrochemical, oil service and alternative fuels markets, such as ethanol, LNG, and biodiesel plants and related pipelines.
“We developed great relationships and improved our plant's skill set for doing commercial and industrial work,” Bedell relayed. “We also reinforced relationships with returning customers in
refining and petrochemical markets as they expanded. We now serve commercial, energy sectors, refining and chemical projects.”
Reliable Partner
Mobil Steel has capacity to deliver multiple projects – six bays with 80,000 feet under roof fabrication area sit on 8.5 acres. When other fabricators cannot meet schedules, Mobil Steel utilizes its flexible capacity to meet customers' requirements.
“Even when not awarded a bid proposal on a new project, we let companies know we are there to back up their fabrication and scheduling needs. We want them to know that we have experience, talent and capacity to deliver on time, and that we are flexible,” advocated Bedell.
“It works to our advantage. Several larger jobs in 2007 developed from jobs we initially were not awarded, generally due to scheduling or performance issues with fabricators selected. We secured future jobs by coming through for the respective projects' completion success.”
Mobil Steel emphasizes long-term relationships. While others over-promise on delivery and capacity to perform, Mobil Steel strives to exceed expectations. Experienced employees forecast reasonable timetables, give accurate pricing and build a partnership to last.
“We are not going to promise a quick turnaround or cheap price to get business,” mentioned Scott. “Our relationships are built on trust and credibility. We deliver on our promises.”
Service & Quality
“We appreciate the trust that our employees, customers and vendor partners placed in us when we were going through tough times,” states Bedell. “We are loyal to those who believed in us and wanted Mobil Steel to succeed. Our vendors, bankers, investors and dedicated employees provided ingredients for a successful transition. We see opportunity to secure more work through loyal relationships and a stronger customer base.”
Mobil Steel repays that trust through community and business service. Employees volunteer with community clubs and little league, contribute to local charities and actively support ABC Greater Houston's industry development and training. Mobil Steel employees and managers sacrifice additional time and effort to be quality certified by American Institute of Steel Contractors (AISC).
“We owe our customers extra value. We provide quality and reliable service job-after-job,” Bedell stated. “Mobil Steel is proud to be one of few Houston area fabricators that have gone the extra step to meet stringent AISC certification.”
“Just like our logo, the AISC quality logo is a mark of excellence in the steel fabrication business,” Bedell emphasized.

Mobil Steel Earns AISC Quality Certification
(HOUSTON, TX) – Mobil Steel recently achieved quality certification recognition, another major milestone as it forges to the front of the steel fabrication business along the U.S. Gulf Coast.
Following a three-month rigorous audit process, the American Institute of Steel Construction certified Mobil Steel as having the personnel, organization, experience, capability and commitment to meet the requirements of the AISC Quality Certification program. Mobil Steel is one of only seven companies in greater Houston with the quality certification designation.
“AISC's quality certification is recognition of the commitment and expertise of our employees,” said Leonard A. Bedell, president and chief executive officer of Mobil Steel.
“We have been improving the company's production efficiencies, contract procurement and financial strength, as well as customer service and vendor partnerships.
“It is gratifying when outside organizations recognize that effort,” Bedell added. “We are now among the elite in our industry; only a handful of companies in the greater Houston area can claim the distinction of quality certification from AISC.”
The AISC quality certification audit was a comprehensive evaluation that took three months to complete. It involved surveys, interviews and inspections with management, supervisors and personnel in the shop. “Although it took considerable time, preparation for a successful audit and the audit process itself provided solid learnings. We have been able to incorporate these learnings into our processes and procedures which will make us a more effective and efficient supplier to our business partners,” Bedell said.
Mobil Steel has focused on adding and improving personnel and providing resources necessary to meet and exceed customer needs, such as on-time delivery and quality of product. Mobil Steel recently added substantial employee benefits, including paid insurance and matching 401(K) and profit sharing plans, to help retain and recruit key personnel.
“The continued growth of our business allows us to retain our talented employees and attract experienced personnel. This enables Mobil Steel to meet and exceed our customers' requirements,” Bedell said.
Mobil Steel's general manager, Mark Scott, rejoined Mobil Steel in 2006 after several leadership stints at major steel fabrication and erection companies. Richard W. Friel, who has 40 years in the manufacturing and fabrication industry and more than a decade at Mobil Steel leading operations and business development, was recently named senior vice president. In that role he will focus on business development, job scheduling, contract administration, and generally meeting customer needs.
Bedell, who brings more than 30 years of management experience to Mobil Steel, including significant expertise in construction, production management, and financial disciplines, has steered troubled companies through business turnarounds. He has overseen Mobil Steel's emergence in the past year as a growing steel fabricator helping meet owner and contractor requirements for projects in the petroleum, petrochemical, power generation and other industrial and commercial industries.
“In an ever-changing economic environment, Mobil Steel has demonstrated that we can meet the production requirements of our customers with continuously improved quality and on-time delivery,” Bedell said. “Our employees and vendor partners have created a momentum that will propel Mobil Steel into a successful future.”

Leonard A. Bedell, president and chief executive officer of Mobil Steel for the past year, was named to Mobil Steel's board of directors and joins the company's ownership as a shareholder. Richard W. Friel was named senior vice president of Mobil Steel and continues his significant operations and business development role within the company. Mark E. Scott was named general manager of Mobil Steel.
Mobil Steel's board and shareholders recognized Bedell for his efforts in improving the company's production efficiencies, contract procurement and financial strength, as well as customer service and vendor partnerships. Bedell has focused on initiatives that help Mobil Steel's personnel improve operational efficiencies, customer delivery schedules, and vendor partner relationships. Mobil Steel recently added substantial employee benefits, including paid insurance and matching 401(K) and profit sharing plans, to retain and recruit key personnel.
Bedell brings more than 30 years of management experience to Mobil Steel, including significant expertise in construction and production management disciplines. As senior vice president, Friel will oversee business development, job scheduling and contract administration. Friel has spent his entire 40 year career in the steel manufacturing and fabrication industry with more than a decade at Mobil Steel.
Scott rejoined Mobil Steel earlier this year after several leadership stints at major steel fabrication and erection companies. Scott literally grew up in the steel fabrication industry at Mobil Steel, where his father was a quality control inspector. While attending school, Scott worked part-time at Mobil Steel until graduation. Shortly thereafter, he earned his certification as a welder and began working his way up through the supervisory ranks at Mobil Steel. Scott worked in management positions at other fabrication and erection companies in the Houston area before rejoining Mobil Steel in February 2006 as a project manager.
“These management changes enable Mobil Steel to position our personnel and resources to improve our goal of meeting and exceeding our customers' required scheduling and quality of product,” Bedell said.
In 2006, Mobil Steel emerged as a growing steel fabricator helping meet owner and contractor requirements for projects in the petroleum, petrochemical, refining and other industrial and commercial industries.
“In an ever-changing economic environment, Mobil Steel has demonstrated that we can meet the production requirements of our customers with continuously improved quality and on-time delivery,” Bedell said. “Our employees and vendor partners have created a momentum that will propel Mobil Steel into a successful new year.”
Mobil Steel has production capacity of 1,100 tons per month in its 80,000 square feet of plant facilities under roof. The 8.5-acre site on South Wayside is conveniently located within major freeway access to the refining and petrochemical complex in Harris and Galveston counties.
Mobil Steel is a member of the American Institute of Steel Construction, Associated Builders and Contractors, Associated General Contractors, and the American Welding Society. As a member of these organizations, Mobil Steel qualifies to appear on essential industrial and commercial bid lists within the industry.
